Five-Step Back-to-School Routine You Need to Start Now
It's
almost time for our kids to return to school after summer break. My kid
is not a morning person, and getting up early for school can be
challenging. The following is a list of ways I try to get organized to
make the morning routine easier.
- Start going to bed earlier
so your child can also wake up earlier. If you start practicing good habits with your
child now, it will be much easier when you don't have time to waste.
- Set out essentials the night before.
Either help your child pick out their outfit or pick it out for them the
night before so it's one less thing you must do the following day.
- Start a rewards chart. Like a chore chart or on your chore chart, start adding morning routine items like getting dressed, brushing your teeth, taking a shower, fixing hair, etc. Work with your child to set a goal and reward that is appropriate for their age group and will motivate them. Sometimes, you may want to have a daily goal. For example, if I only have to remind you twice to get dressed, you can use my phone to play a game in the car on the way. Other times, you may need to set a weekly goal. If you go all week with more than five stars a day out of seven, you get to go to the dollar store and pick out a prize. Let your child put the stickers or magnets on the chart themselves so they get to feel the accomplishment. I use a magnetic chart that works with dry-erase makers and is helpful. It has pre-established chores with pictures of the chores for our kids who are still learning to read. I hung mine on the bottom of the fridge so my son could use it himself. I highly recommend using this tool or something similar to start working on your family's back-to-school routine. https://amzn.to/4fBWOWt
- Breakfast. This
routine will depend on your schedule and school, but kids need to eat in
the morning. My son typically eats breakfast at school, but for
those days, he needs to eat at home. I'm not afraid to admit I do what is
easy and fast. Don't be scared to give your kid cereal, cinnamon
toast, fruit, instant oatmeal, etc. When you're a busy mom like me,
do the best you can, and don't worry about the other people judging you
because you didn't cook your child an organic three-course breakfast
meal.
- Have a designated location for morning essentials.
Ensure your child has a place to store their backpack, jacket,
and shoes.
Check the backpack the night before to make sure there are not any notes
that need to be signed. Get your child in the habit of bringing the
backpack into the house and putting it in the designated spot. Trust
me, this saves time locating missing items at the last minute. You
can practice this before school by having your child put their shoes by
the door when they come into the house, hang up their coat, and put their
backpack of toys they brought to the sitter for the following day.
