Mom School
The other night, I was
teaching my son how to do something fundamental in the kitchen, and he asked me
where I learned to do that task; I told him at “mom school.” He responded, “Is
there a dad school?” I quickly told him I had been joking and learned how
to do it from my mom, but it got me thinking about all the adulting and parting
things I know and how I’ve learned them. I’m so thankful for the people and
resources I have to pull information from that help me figure out this mom
thing because it sure isn’t easy. Mom School helped remind me that I give
him chores because that is how my mom taught me how to function and become an
adult. It is my responsibility to ensure that when my son is ready
to leave the nest, he is prepared, which is why I use a chore chart with my
elementary-age child.

use and recommend as a chore chart to start with: https://amzn.to/3M5NnRw
Chores to Start With
- Basic hygiene. These are essential things to teach
our kids, but they also make our lives so much easier when they need less
help with basic hygiene (brushing teeth, getting dressed, brushing hair,
etc.).
Next Step:
- Simple tasks. Put Dirty dishes at the sink, dirty
clothing in the hamper, and shoes by the door.
Continue to add tasks
based on your child’s age and ability
- Do dishes, fold your laundry, sweep the floor, mop, vacuum, and
clean the bathroom.
